About This Trip:

I think a lot of Michigan natives will know the Manitou Islands as the two cubs lost in Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear Dunes cover their mother as she continues to wait for them. Living in Michigan for most of my life, I have been to the Sleeping Bear Dunes area a few times, although I had never made the trip across the water to explore the islands. This trip to South Manitou was a short weekend trip with some friends to do a few nights of camping and hiking around the island. Considered one of Michigans most haunted areas, the island has a rich history and acts as a beautiful snapshot through time with the remains of the settlements, lighthouse and shipwrecks highlighting the islands relationship with humans. The Manitous are beautiful and I look forward to returning to them to further explore them, next time i’ll need to explore North Manitou.
